What to Pack (and What to Leave Behind) When Relocating to the UAE
Moving to the UAE? Avoid excess baggage and customs issues. Use this packing checklist tailored to the climate, laws, and practical living in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or anywhere in the Emirates.

Climate-Specific Essentials

The UAE is hot, dry, and sunny most of the year. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Breathable clothing: Pack cotton, linen, and moisture-wicking fabrics.
  • Modest attire: Bring long-sleeved tops and full-length bottoms for public areas.
  • Sunscreen: High SPF, broad-spectrum. It’s expensive locally.
  • Sunglasses: UV-protective with polarized lenses.
  • Footwear: Sandals, but also closed shoes for malls, work, and government offices.
  • Reusable water bottle: Essential for staying hydrated.
  • Abaya or Kandura (optional): Not mandatory, but some expats choose local wear for work or events.

Electronics Compatibility

UAE uses Type G power sockets (UK standard, 230V). Pack:

  • Plug adapters: Especially for devices from the US or Europe.
  • Voltage converters: For non-dual voltage electronics.
  • Unlocked phone: UAE SIMs require an unlocked device.
  • Laptop: With region-free charger and VPN software if needed.
  • External hard drive: Optional but helpful for data backups during transition.

Avoid bringing:

  • Hairdryers, irons, or other 110V appliances that don’t support 220–240V.
  • Large electronics that are cheap or easier to buy locally (e.g., TVs).

Documents and Essentials

Carry originals + multiple certified copies:

  • Passport and visa (plus passport photos)
  • Degree certificates (attested if needed)
  • Driver’s license + International Driving Permit
  • Marriage/birth certificates
  • Emirates ID application paperwork
  • Medical prescriptions (with original packaging and doctor letter)

What to Leave Behind

  • Prohibited items:
    • Narcotics and certain medications (check with UAE MOHAP)
    • Pornographic materials
    • Gambling tools
    • Israeli-origin goods
    • E-cigarettes with nicotine liquids (limited legal access)
  • Winter gear: Unless you’re traveling to mountainous regions, coats and boots are dead weight.
  • Books or media with political or religious content: Can be flagged during customs screening.
  • Furniture: Most rentals are semi or fully furnished. Shipping bulky items is rarely cost-effective.

Customs Tips

  • Declare high-value electronics: Especially if you plan to resell later.
  • Avoid hand-carrying prescription drugs unless you have paperwork.
  • Don’t ship food or alcohol: Highly restricted and likely to be confiscated.
  • Label all boxes: Customs checks are random, and clear labeling helps avoid delays.
